Comfortable Protective FR Clothing
- DRIFIRE’s no-rub seams enhance comfort by reducing the impact of dad-to-day chafing hazards while DRIFIRE’s unique blend keeps you cool and dry.
- The dri-release® blend provides a cool, dry garment like traditional performance wear, but with the soft feel of your favorite shirt.
- In a blind sampling, 89% of people preferred the soft feel of the dri-release® blend to cotton.
- DRIFIRE is engineered with the FreshGuard® odor management formula that naturally and permanently neutralizes odor causing bacteria.
- 94% of people sampled found that FreshGuard® eliminates odor unlike polyester & Nomex garments.
- DRIFIRE keeps you comfortable in stressful environments using the dri-release® blend, and provides you the piece of mind, knowing you have a layer of protection in the event of a fire or flash fire.
Comfort has much to do with how a garment feels to the touch; how it wears. Does it let you move freely; does it move as you move? Can it be worn for extended periods of time and still remain fresh? Does it act and feel natural. And, especially true for next-to-skin garments, you want to know the material won’t be at war with your skin, figuratively and literally. To these definitions of comfort, DRIFIRE products are second to none. The stellar respective qualities of the two blended hydrophobic and hydrophilic fibers used in the driFIRE fabric are the reason why our garments
feel so good. But there are other qualities embedded in these fibers that you won’t necessarily feel or see, but that are redefining and expanding upon the term ‘body friendly.’
About 85% of any DRIFIRE garment is composed of a fiber generally known as modacrylic. The remaining portion is called lyocell. The two are blended to a patented proportion to achieve an industry-first performance-wear solution that is both flame resistant (FR) as well as unforgiving when it comes to moisture buildup that occurs naturally while you’re active. In addition to the respective technical chemistries of these proven FR and moisture management (MM) fibers, they have other, unrelated attributes that combine to produce a fabric that feels like nothing you’ve ever worn. Here’s why:
Modacrylic is a relatively low fabric density material. This means that exceptionally low-weight, high-comfort garments like ours can be produced. Soft, strong, resilient, and dimensionally stable, modacrylic fibers show good press and shape retention and are quick to dry. They have outstanding resistance to chemicals and solvents, are not attacked by moths or mildew, and are non-allergenic. Fabric experts will also often note that modacrylic features relatively high durability comparable to wool, a moderate resistance to abrasion, and a very low tenacity. As a result, modacrylic-based blends are soft, warm, light and resilient and display high performance when it comes to appearance retention. The fibers do not wrinkle, they have great dimensional stability, high elastic recovery, and the overall ability to hold their shape. In short, modacrylic makes you feel your best and look your best.
DRIFIRE’s remarkable wicking and drying capabilities are made possible by a hydrophilic (water-seeking) fiber known as lyocell. It is 50% more absorbant than cotton. It can absorb 130% more vapor than cotton, too. It wicks and dries moisture better and faster than wool, cotton, polyester and just about everything else under the sun and certainly better than anything else you can wear under your outerwear.
But in addition to its unque ability to drink, disperse and dissipate moisture, lyocell is a comfortable fabric for a variety of traditional reasons as well as some qualities that are unique to this fiber.
In terms of feel, lyocell is soft, very strong when wet or dry, and resistant to wrinkles; it can be machine- or hand-washed or drycleaned.
But in terms of its ecological and hygenic qualities, lyocell has bonus features. Some refer to it as the "eco-friendly alternative to cotton." According to the Lyocell Information network at loyocell.net, "Lyocell… constitutes a new fibre for clothing, hygiene, medical and technical applications. The production process for Lyocell is extremely environmentally friendly – the fibre has all the advantages of a natural material and is 100% bio-degradable."
Fact is, the skin is the largest human respiratory organ. Human skin acts as a protective shell, regulates body temperature and maintains water balance. The brand of lyocell we use, called Tencel®, supports these body functions acting like a second skin.
A subjective feeling of well-being depends considerably on moisture absorption and on surface structure of the fibers. Rougher fibers can lead to skin irritation. The extremely smooth surface of Tencel feels soft and pleasant to the skin. The reason for the fine surface of the fiber is low fiber stiffness.
A comparison of the fiber surfaces makes the difference patently obvious. TENCEL® fiber has a smoother and more supple surface than wool or cotton. Wool tends to have a scaly surface, while cotton is irregular and rough.
The combination of a smooth fiber surface and excellent moisture absorption creates a positive environment for healthy skin. According to recent dermatological studies, wearing clothing made of TENCEL® significantly improves comfort and promotes a feeling of well being.* (Dermatological study of the textile compatibility of TENCEL®, 2004, Univ.-Prof. Dr. T.L. Diepgen, Heidelberg, Germany) Also, TENCEL® is chemical free, an important factor for sensitive skin and another asset in comparison to other fibers of a natural origin.
When it comes to hygiene and the growth of bacteria, the inherent and natural properties of TENCEL® deliver a variety of benefits for sensitive skin. TENCEL® does not give bacteria a chance to grow. Bacterial growth is prevented in a completely natural way. The perfect moisture management of the fiber is the key. When moisture is produced it is directly absorbed from the skin and transported to the inside of the fiber. Thus no water film is produced on the skin where bacteria could grow.
When it comes to water absorption capacity, TENCEL® is definitely superior to other fibers. Bacterial growth was observed in various fibers, and TENCEL®, with its rapid absorption of moisture and high absorption capacity proved most effective in inhibiting growth.
The result demonstrates that TENCEL® is the most naturally hygienic fiber. TENCEL® prevents the growth of bacteria naturally without the addition of chemical additives. With synthetic fibers on the other hand, the growth of bacteria increases 2000 fold in comparison to TENCEL®.
